Mike Lawrence, PhD student in the Experimental Psychology program at Dalhousie University, is conducting an experiment on attention and memory that will take place in the Department of Psychology. The experiment involves playing a simple video game. We may use special equipment to monitor your eyes, either mounted on a helmet-like camera system or using a desktop camera zoomed in on your eye. Participation in this study will take about an hour to complete in total and will provide $15 to compensate time spent participating in the experiment. If you are between the ages of 18–30 and interested in participating in this experiment, contact Mike at mla@dal.ca for more information

At the Early Social Development Lab at Dalhousie University, we study how kids interact with the world around them. You can learn more about our work at http://esdl.psychology.dal.ca.

We are currently looking for kids between the ages of 4 months and 8 years to participate in a study about their social development.

With the infants (aged 4–9 months) we are interested in when young children begin to recognize themselves. With the older kids (aged 4–8 years) we are interested in how kids understand the concepts of sharing and fairness.

We would like to ask for your assistance with our research! If you have a child between these ages and are willing to volunteer 20–45 minutes of your time, we would appreciate hearing from you!

During a study visit, your child will be asked to perform a simple task or play an interactive game. All our studies are completely safe and fun! You will be present in the room throughout the study.

Children will receive a certificate as a thank-you for coming in to play. Older children will receive a sticker book and stickers, too.

Please contact me for more information:

We are looking for children between the ages of 8 and 14 years old who want to participate in a fun research study in the Centre for Pediatric Pain Research at the IWK Health Centre.

Children and parents will be asked to come into the lab for 60 minutes. When you come in we will explain all of the details of the study and ask you if you and your child want to participate, then you and your child will be asked a few demographic questions and your child will participate in a cold water task and answer a few questions about what the task felt like. This cold water task has been used in many of our research studies before and kids have generally enjoyed doing it. This study is a fun opportunity for parents and children to participate in research that will help us better understand some interesting aspects of children’s pain and will make a contribution to science.

Parents will receive $5 to assist with parking and children will receive $10 and a junior scientist thank you certificate for their help.

If you are interested in finding out more about this research study, please contact either us at (902) 470‑6906 or leah.wofsy@iwk.nshealth.ca

Hi folks,

Mike Lawrence here, I’m a grad student in the department and I’m the one that created/maintains this site. I’d like to get a sense of the number of people that visit this site, whether directly or by RSS feed. The former is easy (we get about 100 direct web visits per month), but counting RSS subscribers is more tricky. To do a proper count, I think the best approach is to ask everyone who sees this ad to complete the questionnaire below. The number of responses should help evaluate the number of subscribers. Also, the content of the poll will help me evaluate the degree to which this electronic medium compares to the traditional “posters on the wall” approach. (Extra points for figuring out why this might not be considered a generalizable poll).

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post’s poll.

Our study is ongoing until at least December 2010, maybe longer.

The study is run over three days:
–The first night you will come in around 10 pm and sleep in the lab overnight just to get accustomed to the lab setting. You will go home at 8 am.
–The second night you will come in around 10 pm and sleep in the lab overnight, and your EEG will be recorded with electrodes on your face and scalp. You will be asked to stay in the lab the following day.
–The third and final day, you will stay in the lab upon waking up and you will be asked to do computer tasks throughout the day. You will leave at approximately 8 pm that evening. Meals on Wednesday will be provided and you will be compensated for your time.

The lab at the Abbie Lane building at the QE2 is shared, and thus most of my study days allotted to me are Monday evenings, Tuesday evenings and Wednesday daytime sessions. This may require you to miss some activities on a Wednesday, and you should plan for this accordingly.

If you are still interested in the study and you absolutely cannot make a Wednesday day off work for you, I may be able to schedule you a weekend time slot in extreme circumstances.

You MUST be on oral birth control pills, and you MUST NOT be within 7 days until the onset of menstruation or menstruating at the time of the study, so please consider this when you consider which time slot you would like to book for yourself.

Finally, you are required to wear an actigraph (sort of like a wrist watch that measures your wrist motion) for 1 week before your participation in the study. I would be able to meet you at Dalhousie, the QE2, or somewhere convenient for you to talk to you about the study, fill out questionnaires and get you set up with an actigraph the Monday before the week you want to participate.

Please contact Avery Nixon at Avery.Nixon@dal.ca or at 902–488-7303 if you are interested!

Does familiarity influence processing of emotional expressions?

This is a 2-part study, open to anyone 16 years of age or older. The main objective of the project is to investigate how we process our own emotional expressions (self) vs. those of people we do not know (other). In Part 1, your facial expression will be recorded while looking at images presented on a computer screen. In Part 2, you will be tested on recognition of your own facial responses to the images and the facial responses of another, unknown, person to the same images. Recording of your facial expression in Part 1 is mandatory for participation. If there are any problems in the recordings, such as technical problems, then you may not be asked to return for Part 2. Both sessions will take no more than an hour to complete and you will receive $10 per session completed.

Please email Alanna Gravely (agravely@dal.ca) for more information about the study and to schedule your session for Part 1.
